Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS)
The Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS) is an interdisciplinary research centre at the University of Osnabrück. It was founded in 1990/91 and was the first regular university research institute in Germany dedicated to questions of migration and integration. From 2010 to 2020 it was headed by Prof Dr Andreas Pott, since 2021 Prof Dr Helen Schwenken has been Director of IMIS. IMIS brings together researchers from various disciplines. Due to its basic research, its expertise and its interdisciplinary breadth, which is unique in Germany, IMIS is one of the internationally most renowned institutions for migration research. Through publications, public events and the academic advisory activities of its members, it makes an important contribution to interdisciplinary research and to the dialogue between academia, practitioners, policy and public. The research interests and projects at IMIS are currently focussed in four fields: "Migration regimes", "Forced migration: Conditions, forms, and consequences", "Migration Societies" and " Production of Knowledge".
