Prof. Dr. Margit Feischmidt

Prof Dr Margit Feischmidt is a senior researcher at the HUN-REN Centre for Social Sciences, Hungarian Academy of Sciences Centre of Excellence, where she is head of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology in Minority Studies. She is also the editor of Intersections. East European Journal of Society and Politics and teaches as a full professor at the Institute of Communication and Media Studies, University of Pécs.

She is a returning visiting professor at the Nationalism Studies Programme, Central European University, and received a Humboldt Alumni Award in 2016. She was a visiting researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle in 2017 and 2018, and a visiting professor at the Department of European Ethnology, University of Göttingen in 2021.

In her current project (Nationalism in the context of the rise and expanding populist authoritarian regimes in Europe), she investigates the political architecture, social resonance and cultural reproduction of nationalism, with a special focus on the role of diaspora in the expansion of populist ethno-nationalism and of certain moral emotions, such as shame or solidarity, in the maintenance of civic nationhood.
