Lunch Discussion – Migration and museum. From memory to the future.

/ Events, Records & Reviews

Memory, staging, mediation: How can migration be exhibited and what can the museum do for the post-migrant society?

Face-to-face event

Wednesday, 21 February 2024
13:30-15:00

DeZIM.hall on the 3rd floor of the
Mauerstr. 76, 10117 Berlin

At this lunch discussion, we spoke with our guests from the Museum Friedland,  the Deutschen Auswandererhaus in Bremerhaven and the Dokumentationszentrum und Museum über die Migration in Deutschland e.V. (DOMID) in Cologne about the past, present and future of migration in a museum context.

The guests from the various museums began by briefly introducing the history of their locations and their museum practices before engaging in a joint discussion on how migration history can be told in museums. Who should tell it and why? What is primarily told and represented, and what is not? And what contribution does this museum work make to the local and supra-regional post-migrant society?

Our guests:

  • Piritta Kleiner (Museum Friedland: Transit Friedland – Ein Einblick in die neue Dauerausstellung)
  • Dr. Simone Blaschka (Deutsches Auswandererhaus in Bremerhaven: Wissensbildung im Migrationsmuseum: Objekte, Inszenierungen und Metaebenen)
  • Bebero Lehmann (DOMiD: Von der Garage zum Migrationsmuseum. DOMiDs Weg zum Haus der Einwanderungsgesellschaft)

Moderation:
