Memory, staging, mediation: How can migration be exhibited and what can the museum do for the post-migrant society?

At this lunch discussion, we spoke with our guests from the Museum Friedland,  the Deutschen Auswandererhaus in Bremerhaven and the Dokumentationszentrum und Museum über die Migration in Deutschland e.V. (DOMID) in Cologne about the past, present and future of migration in a museum context.

The guests from the various museums began by briefly introducing the history of their locations and their museum practices before engaging in a joint discussion on how migration history can be told in museums. Who should tell it and why? What is primarily told and represented, and what is not? And what contribution does this museum work make to the local and supra-regional post-migrant society?

Moderation:

 

Piritta Kleiner has been working at the Friedland Museum since 2020 and is currently curating the new permanent exhibition there, which will open in 2025. From 2017 to 2020, she worked as a freelance curator and academic author for the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial, among others. From 2010 to 2017, she realised the Munich 1972 Olympic Assassination Memorial and exhibitions on Jewish displaced persons and Russian-speaking Jews at the Jewish Museum in Munich.
Simone Blaschka has been Director of the German Emigration Centre Bremerhaven since 2006. In 2021, she co-founded the Academy of Comparative Migration Studies (ACOMIS), a research and educational institute at the German Emigration Centre. Since 2006, the museum has shown over 30 special exhibitions on various migration topics. Simone Blaschka is the editor of edition dah.
Bebero Lehmann is a historian. As a research assistant specialising in curation, she is helping to design the migration museum Haus der Einwanderungsgesellschaft (working title), which is currently being created through DOMiD. She previously worked as a curator in the project Dekoloniale - Erinnerungskultur in der Stadt, where she realised cooperative exhibitions with the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district museums.
