- Data–Methods–Monitoring Cluster
A central task of DeZIM is to objectify public debates with scientific studies. The Data-Method-Monitoring Cluster and the Research Data Center are essential for this. The cluster develops and tests innovative survey procedures and methods and makes its expertise available to the entire institute. DeZIM.fdz archives and documents the institute's data, provides access to it and thus supports monitoring and knowledge transfer.
The Cluster is concerned with the basic elements of research: we develop innovative approaches and methods, refine existing processes and make data accessible – not just for the researchers at DeZIM, but for anyone interested.Dr. Jannes Jacobsen, Head of the Data-Methods-Monitoring Cluster
Central infrastructure:
- DeZIM.fdz serves as the central infrastructure at DeZIM for providing research data to external parties.
- DeZIM.panel is established as the institute's central survey infrastructure and is open for the research community.
- The browser-based online platform MIND.set offers a research resource for the creation and implementation of cognitive tests (such as the Implicit Assosications Test, IAT) and enables easy integration into online surveys.
- Since 2023, the cluster has been organizing the DeZIM Summer School for Research Methods.

The research data centre and the cluster consist of five equal pillars:
The first pillar at DeZIM.fdz is the data archive. Here, data produced in the context of research projects at DeZIM, the institutes of the DeZIM research community or beyond are archived and made available for scientific reuse.
The second pillar deals with the meta data of these studies to ensure that the data can be found according to the FAIR criteria.
The third pillar is the DeZIM.survey area. Here, the cluster and the DeZIM.fdz jointly administer the DeZIM.panel.
The fourth pillar is the DeZIM.methods area. This area works on the quality of research data and evaluation methods. This includes testing and developing indicators, adapting and developing survey methods, developing survey designs, and advising on the evaluation of research data.
The fifth pillar is the DeZIM.lab. This is where work is carried out on experimental designs. This includes the testing and development of experimental designs, as well as advice on the design of experiments. In addition, the DeZIM.lab is developing MIND.set, a research resource for creating and conducting experiments and cognitive tests in online surveys, and preparing it for use by other researchers.
These five pillars cover all steps of an empirical research project, from the conception and realisation of a study's design to the analysis of the collected data. This results in comprehensive methodological advice at the DeZIM Institute. The cluster's methodological advice is not only available to the institute's employees, but also to civil society, politics and public administration. Interested parties can contact methodenberatung(at)dezim-institut.de. The cluster works closely with the research data centre in all areas.
- The programming of the FDZ IT infrastructure and the associated provision of research data for external parties.
- The DeZIM.panel has established itself as the Institute's central survey infrastructure and has been opened up to the research community.
- With MIND.set , a research resource for creating and conducting experiments and cognitive tests in online surveys was set up and prepared for use by other researchers.
- In 2023, the first DeZIM Summer School in Research Methods was held, which will be a central component of the infrastructure at DeZIM in the future. There is already a continuation of the DeZIM Summer School in 2024.
