Cross-Migration ‘Current European and Cross-National Comparative Research and Research Actions on Migration’
Migration Department
Project head: Dr. Franck Düvell
Former project member: Carlotta Preiß
This project brought together 16 leading research institutes (mostly from the formerly EU-funded Network of Excellence "IMISCOE - International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion in Europe") and think tanks as well as international organisations and created a central hub. Together, a database was created that categorises the diverse research on migration and its dynamics and provides and visualises an overview of migration drivers, infrastructures (such as routes, hubs, transport companies/service providers/smugglers, networks, social media), movements and policies. Among other things, this enables users to develop scenarios for future migrations. In close cooperation with the EU Commission, research gaps, overlaps and cross-connections were identified in order to formulate an agenda for migration research in the coming years. The DeZIM Institute (Dr Franck Düvell) led work package 5 "Infrastructures of Migration" and contributed to the realisation of further work packages.
Results: With the help of data mining, machine learning and a taxonomy, the most comprehensive database on research in the field of migration to date is being created (www.migrationresearch.com), which is constantly being expanded by the members of the IMISCOE network and users. Together with international experts, a conceptual and theoretical framework on the topics of "migration infrastructures" and "digital migration infrastructures" was developed. The project has resulted in a research report, a policy brief, two articles in an anthology, a special issue of a specialist journal and a specialist article. In addition, the results were presented in a lecture and at a conference, and some of them were taken up by the EU Research Excellence Agency (REA) in its current research programme.
