Engagement for refugees in transition

The war in Ukraine has once again put the reception of refugees and the role of civil society at the centre of political debates. Similar to the "long summer of migration" in 2015, a strong activation in voluntary engagement for refugees can be observed. However, it is not yet clear to what extent the current patterns of receptiveness and engagement differ from those of earlier periods. In addition, there is a lack of studies that take a closer look at how engagement with refugees has changed over time at the individual and organisational level. Against this background, the project will examine how engagement with refugees has developed in Germany in recent years and, in particular, how it has changed since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. Using quantitative survey data, individual patterns of engagement will be traced. The project builds on extensive preliminary work at DeZIM and combines quantitative and qualitative data and research methods.
