Running time June 2020 until December 2021
Status Completed project

Discrimination is an everyday reality for many people in Germany. The study on experiences of discrimination and diversity-related attitudes in Saxony examines how discrimination is experienced by people in Saxony who are affected by it. Among other things, it sheds light on how people who have experienced discrimination defend themselves against it, what coping strategies and skills they have and what support they need. An online survey will be conducted for this purpose. In addition, an online access panel will be used to survey the entire population of the federal state on their attitudes towards diversity and on how they evaluate positive measures against discrimination. The study team will be supported by civil society actors in Saxony, who will be involved in a participatory manner. The study aims to draw a differentiated picture of the situation and to record intersectional forms of discrimination. In addition, recommendations for action are to be developed for the federal state.

The focus is on the following overarching questions:

  • How do people in Saxony experience discrimination? What do they perceive as discrimination, along which characteristics and in which areas of life do they experience discrimination?
  • How do those affected react to discrimination and what possibilities do they have to defend themselves against it?
  • Which coping strategies and competences can be identified?
  • What are the needs for support?
  • What are the consequences and effects of experiences of discrimination on well-being, health, social participation and own socio-political attitudes?
  • What attitudes relevant to discrimination and equality do people in Saxony have?
  • What is the acceptance of positive measures?
