Refugee families from Ukraine

Perspectives on arriving in Germany

Running time January 2023 until December 2024
Status Completed project

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has led to the ongoing destruction of civilian infrastructure and civilian casualties. This has forced more than 6 million people to leave their homes and country in search of safety, protection and assistance. More than 900,000 of them found refuge in Germany. The project examines the situation and subjective perspectives of this group and asks about their interactions with different state as well as civil society counselling centres, authorities and other state institutions such as schools at the federal, state and local levels in relation to their specific needs. Central to this is the context of legal (in)security as well as the aspirations of the refugees from Ukraine to stay or return, also in comparison to the groups of refugees who came to Germany in 2015-2016, insofar as a comparison based on accessible data and existing empirical studies is possible. We are interested in the subjective experiences and perspectives of the group with regard to previous research findings on the construction of socio-political neediness of immigrants and refugees (according to section 24, Residence Act) as well as the question of the relationship of these groups to the state.
