Transnational perspectives on discrimination, well-being and mobility

Migration Department

Project head: Dr. Ramona RischkeDr. Zeynep Yanaşmayan

Running time January 2023 until December 2024
Status Current project

The project investigates the experiences of discrimination of Syrians, Afghans and members of the host society in Turkey and Lebanon, two main host countries for Syrian refugees, where the latter are increasingly exposed to negative public discourses and hostility. Building on recently collected quantitative primary and other secondary data, as well as in-depth qualitative data collection, we elaborate intersectional patterns of discrimination and analyse how experiences of discrimination differ in both countries and for different populations, and how experiences of discrimination affect well-being and mobility aspirations. Through this multi-level comparison, we will be able to identify context-specific and changing hierarchies of 'good' and 'bad' migrants, linked for example to country of origin, gender and class.
