We are looking forward to welcome Victoria Rietig, Head of Migration at DGAP (German Council on Foreign Relations), and Susan Fratzke, Senior Policy Analyst at the Migration Policy Institute at DeZIM Insitute. Together we will discuss recent changes in US migration policy and their impact on the German political discourse. The conversation will cover key developments in US migration policy, including the large-scale deportation of undocumented migrants, the significant pressure on neighboring countries to curb border crossings into the US and to accept returning nationals, as well as the severe restriction of asylum application opportunities and international engagement on global migration issues.

The speakers will examine how U.S. approaches to migration policy implementation – through emergency declarations, foreign aid influence and executive actions – are reflected in current political debates and election platforms in Germany. The discussion will explore critical questions about Germany's political course, coalition dynamics and implications for European migration policy.

Guests:

  • Victoria Rietig heads the DGAP's Migration Program and has over twenty years of experience in migration research and policy analysis.
  • Susan Fratzke is a specialist in comparative asylum policy and refugee resettlement at the Migration Policy Institute.
  • The Lunch_Discussion will be moderated by Liam Haller. He is a research associate at the DeZIM Institute (Migration Department). His research focuses on Migration decisions and outcomes.

The event will be held in English.
