Prof. Dr. Mark Brown is Professor in the Department of Political Science at California State University, Sacramento, where he is also an affiliated faculty member in the Black Honors College. His primary field is political theory. His recent research includes work on the politics of racial identity, critical whiteness studies, reparations to African Americans, and the political thought of James Baldwin. He studied at UC Santa Cruz and the University of Göttingen (1986-90) and received a Ph.D. in Political Science from Rutgers University (2001). He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Science and Technology Studies, Bielefeld University (2001-03), and he has held guest appointments at Bielefeld University (2008-09, 2011, 2021) and the Free University of Berlin (2018).
