MIND.set

MIND.set is a browser-based online platform for the creation and implementation of indirect tests to measure spontaneous associations and reaction tendencies. These tests are used in social psychological research on stereotypes and prejudices.

Five indirect tests are currently implemented:

Registration, login and use of MIND.set

On MIND.set, you can create tests, collect data and generate results data yourself. You can use stimulus material from the platform's media pool, in particular the DeZIM Picture Database, or upload your own stimulus material to your tests. The tests can be sent directly to participants as a standalone link or can be integrated into surveys. For SoSci Survey, Unipark, Tivian/EFS and LimeSurvey we offer a simplified step-by-step integration.

Overview of the tests in MIND.set

MIND.set is available to the research public after registration. Researchers can create their own tests directly via MIND.set and conduct them online - the test alone or integrated into an online survey with external online survey tools (such as SoSci Survey, Unipark, Tivian/EFS and LimeSurvey) - and then download the test results.

Here you can see two example scenes from the avoidance task:
The task of the test participants here is to decide in a matter of seconds whether the side of the road needs to be changed if the person depicted is armed.

MIND.set is accessible to the scientific community and is available free of charge to researchers at all levels, from students to professors. The aim is to facilitate research with and on indirect test procedures across disciplinary boundaries.

This is realized through:

  • a user-friendly interface (with selection menus, information boxes and the option of copying and modifying standard tests),
  • extensive accompanying material (from validated stimulus material from the DeZIM photo databases to detailed manuals and sample evaluation codes in R),
  • the optimization of the tests for computers with keyboards and mobile devices and
  • the possibility of barrier-free integration of the tests in online surveys (i.e. without prior installation of software and with automatic transitions from the survey to the test and back).

Accompanying materials

Current research

  • Device test: Validation study on the influence of the end device (mobile devices such as smartphones vs. devices with a keyboard such as laptops) on the results of IATs, AMPs, STs, ATs and SMPs using the example of threat associations with Arabic-reading men
  • IAT length test: Validation study of shorter IAT variants using the example of two IATs on spontaneous associations with black or Arabic-read men compared to white men
  • IAT-goes-Panel: Study to examine the re-test reliability and the bias-of-crowds approach (regionally aggregated test data) for an IAT on spontaneous associations with Arab-read people compared to white people by including an IAT in two survey waves of the DeZIM.panel
  • Admit or conceal? Comparison of explicit attitudes towards Arabic-read people with the results of a list experiment and an IAT using a DeZIM.panel wave
  • Cross-country comparative IAT: Study on intersectional dynamics in spontaneous associations with names from African and Muslim countries compared to the respective national majority in nine European countries(EqualStrength project)
