Guiding research questions
MIND.set is available free of charge to all researchers to facilitate scientific work with indirect testing methods across disciplinary boundaries.Dr. Elli Zey, Research Associate, Cluster Data–Methods–Monitoring
MIND.set is an innovative online platform that enables researchers to create and conduct indirect tests to measure spontaneous associations and response tendencies. The platform is designed for empirical research on stereotypes and spontaneous associations and offers five established testing paradigms (including the Implicit Association Task and the Affect Misattribution Procedure).
After free registration, users can create their own tests, access validated stimulus material from the DeZIM Picture Database, or upload their own material. The platform itself is available in English, and tests can be created in 10 languages: Arabic, German, English, French, Dutch, Russian, Spanish, Czech, Turkish, and Hungarian. In addition, each test can be seamlessly integrated into common online survey tools (e.g., SoSci Survey, LimeSurvey). The aim is to simplify research using indirect testing methods and make it accessible across disciplines.
- Methodological diversity: Each method has advantages and disadvantages. For example, self-reports are prone to bias due to social desirability, whereas indirect tests are less affected by this.
- Devices: MIND.set is optimized for use on smartphones and tablets. Differences in results depending on the device used can be analyzed.
Technical barriers: MIND.set allows for the easy integration of indirect tests into online surveys conducted with common survey software (e.g., LimeSurvey, Tivian, SoSci Survey) — even without prior technical knowledge.
- Provision of a low-threshold, scientifically grounded platform for indirect testing.
- Promotion of interdisciplinary research and methodological innovation.
- Validation and optimization of existing methods for different devices, contexts, and languages.
- Application of indirect tests in education, NGOs, and practice-oriented contexts (e.g., IAT with feedback).
- Technical development of an intuitive platform (MIND.set).
- Provision of validated stimuli and comprehensive manuals.
- Integration into survey tools and provision of example analysis scripts.
- Conducting systematic validation studies.
- Research on methodology and substantive questions (e.g., bias-of-crowds).
Integration into online surveys has been successful, and the MIND.set platform is now being used by external researchers for scientific purposes. Our validation studies show that the platform produces reliable results, regardless of the device used.
