When: Tuesday, May 5, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Where: Online (Zoom)
The focus will be on the labor market integration and participation of women with refugee backgrounds from a gender equality policy perspective and how these can be improved. The discussion will address specific barriers, unique characteristics, and potential of this target group, as well as structural inequalities in the labor market.
Following opening remarks by Franziska Rauchut, Head of the Knowledge, Consulting, and Innovation Division at the Federal Foundation for Gender Equality, the following publications will be presented as a basis for the discussion:
Factsheet from the Federal Foundation for Gender Equality: “Gender Migration Gaps: Gender, Migration, and Refugee Status in the German Labor Market”
Based on a special analysis by the SOEP, this factsheet provides a concise overview of various gaps in the labor market along the axes of “gender” and “migration.” Authors Lukas Zielinski and Pauline Hachenberg highlight inequalities in the areas of participation, time, and income. It becomes clear why an intersectional perspective on equality in the labor market is necessary. (Publication in early May)
Springer Essential: “How Can the Labor Market Integration of Women with Refugee Experience Succeed? Specific Characteristics, Success Factors, and Solutions”
Focuses on the specific characteristics of the target group, key success factors for sustainable labor market integration, practical examples, and solutions that demonstrate how existing potential can be better utilized and structural barriers broken down. The Springer Essential is a publication of the Minor Project Sefa, funded by the Mercator Foundation, and is presented by Lejla Medanhodžić. (Free download here)
DeZIM Commentary:
In addition, Dr. Nora Ratzmann and Prof. Magdalena Nowicka from the German Center for Integration and Migration Research (DeZIM, Integration Department) offer a critical analysis and broaden the perspective on the topic based on their research on the social participation of refugee women from Ukraine.
