Research on mixed-race identities remains underdeveloped in Germany despite the historical and current relevance of the topic. This is underscored not least by the steadily rising number of children born to binational couples. This event, organized by the Knowledge Network for Racism Research (WinRa) as part of “Research Wednesdays” at the DeZIM Institute, invites scholars to a critical exchange on mixed-race research in Germany and beyond. By bringing together perspectives from various contexts and disciplines, the event aims to strengthen dialogue and further develop this field of research.

The subsequent discussion, moderated by Dr. Aisha-Nusrat Ahmad (Scientific Director of WinRa), will address the following questions, among others:

  • What is the current state of research in Germany on mixed identities, and what are the distinctive features of the German context in this area?
  • Why is this research underdeveloped in international comparison, even though it is highly relevant to those affected?
  • What insights can be gained from international contexts for research in Germany, and how can terms/concepts—e.g., from the Anglo-American sphere—be successfully applied?
  • Which terms are predominantly used in Germany to discuss this phenomenon?
  • What challenges and opportunities exist for establishing and strengthening research on this topic, and how can international networking contribute to this?

The following will participate in the discussion:

  • Dr. Rhianna Garrett, Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at Northumbria University and DeZIM/WinRa Fellow
  • Dr. Nkechi Madubuko, sociologist, diversity trainer, educational consultant, and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Marburg
  • Dr. Mithu Sanyal, cultural studies scholar and bestselling author (“Identitti”)
  • Dr. Johanna Wetzel, historian and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bremen
