DeZIM signs partnership agreement on migration research in Ethiopia

Ethiopia, Canada and Germany are thus establishing a new international partnership.

Dr. Noa Ha, Scientific Managing Director of the German Center for Integration and Migration Research (DeZIM), signed a new Memorandum of Understanding in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The agreement was concluded together with the Ethiopian Ministry of Education (Migration Research Working Group), represented by State Minister Kora Tushune Godana, and the Soli*City International Partnership Project from Toronto Metropolitan University, represented by Prof. Harald Bauder.

This new agreement brings together partners from Ethiopia, Canada, and Germany to strengthen research on migration across Ethiopia, East Africa, and beyond. It aims to advance academic collaboration, inform better migration policies, and deepen international cooperation.

The partnership will focus on

  • Expanding research into how migration shapes cities in Ethiopia, East Africa, and Europe, with special attention to climate-driven migration.
  • Identifying gaps and new trends in migration policy to support the development of forward-looking legal and policy frameworks.
  • Promoting academic exchange, collaboration, and training for the next generation of migration researchers.
  • Boosting the impact and visibility of Ethiopia’s technical working group on migration research.

“This collaboration matters greatly to DeZIM and to Germany,” said Dr. Noa Ha. “Migration dynamics in East Africa are deeply connected to global movements and have a real impact on European societies. Through this partnership, we are helping to build a more evidence-based and globally responsible migration policy.”

DeZIM is excited about the opportunities this new partnership will create and looks forward to making a positive contribution to migration research and policy at local, regional, national, and international levels.
