Johanna Bastian studied political science at the University of Leipzig before obtaining her master’s degree in Geography from the University of Bonn with a focus on cultural and social geography.

Her areas of interest include reflexive migration studies, feminist geographies and qualitative research methods. In addition to her work in the project "Life Strategies of Young Mobile Persons in Ageing Societies", Johanna is currently working on her doctoral research project "What Makes a Friendly Space? Friendship Formation and Their Influence on Translocational Belonging in Young Mobile Persons Lives". She is interested in the role of friendships in the arrival process of young people in Berlin with a special focus on the interaction between social relations and (non-)access to urban spaces as well as experiences of translocational belongings.

Before joining DeZIM, she worked in the research project "Everyday Experiences of Young Refugees and Ayslum Seekers in Public Space" and supported the research group on Geographies of Belonging and Difference at the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography.
