The DeZIM Institute is pleased to welcome the renowned sociologist Prof. Dr. Nancy Foner from City University of New York (CUNY) as a DeZIM-Fellow in Berlin.  

We will take the opportunity to talk to her in person about her latest book One Quarter of the Nation: Immigration and Transformation of America. 

In her book, Nancy Foner shows how immigrants and their children have transformed the American experience in profound and far-reaching ways. She discusses how they have rejuvenated urban and rural communities, strengthened the economy, and touched virtually every facet of American culture from food to novels and popular music.  

We are delighted to welcome Prof. Dr. Gökce Yurdakul, Georg Simmel Professor of Diversity and Social Conflict at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, to comment on the book. Author and journalist Annika Brockschmidt (ZEIT Online and Tagesspiegel) will host the event. DeZIM Director Prof. Dr. Naika Foroutan will welcome our guests.

Nancy Foner is Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Hunter College and the CUNY Graduate Center. Her recent work has focused on comparing immigration in the US today and in the past; immigrant minorities in the US and Europe; and how immigration has been remaking American society. She has written extensively on immigration to New York City, past and present, as well as Jamaican migration to New York and London, especially on issues of race and ethnicity, gender, and family dynamics.

Annika Brockschmidt studied History, German Studies and War and Conflict Studies in Heidelberg, Durham and Potsdam. She is a freelance journalist and author, has worked for the ZDF Hauptstadtstudio and produced the podcast "Science Pie", which received an award from the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft, as well as the "HistoPod" for the Federal Agency for Civic Education. She writes, among others, for the Tagesspiegel, ZEIT Online and ZEIT Geschichte.
Gökce Yurdakul is Georg Simmel Professor of Diversity and Social Conflict at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Director of the Berlin Institute of Migration and Integration Research (BIM). Previously, she was the Director of the Department of Social Sciences at her university from 2019-21. Her areas of interest are gender, immigration, citizenship, specifically issues of Muslim women in Western Europe.
