DeZIM_book discussion: Flight in parliamentary debates - a global comparison of six countries.
DeZIM_bookdiscussion
Mittwoch, den 12.2.2025
17:00 – 18:30 Uhr
DeZIM.Saal im 3. OG der
Mauerstr. 76, 10117 Berlin
We are pleased to invite you to the presentation of the book "Framing Refugees. How the Admission of Refugees is Debated in Six Countries across the World" with the authors Daniel Drewski and Jürgen Gerhards.
In the study, published by Oxford University Press, the two authors explore the question of why some countries accept refugees and others do not. To this end, they conducted a discourse analysis of parliamentary debates in six countries: Germany, Poland, Turkey, Chile, Singapore and Uganda. They show how the framing of national identity in particular influences the countries' admission policies.
At the event, the authors will first present the most important results of the study. The discussion will provide an opportunity to critically reflect on the findings of the study and highlight their relevance for current political decisions. The focus will be on the following questions:
- How does the culturally shared definition of "us" and "them" influence the refugee policies of governments and opposition parties?
- Why does Uganda, for example, have an open refugee policy, while economically stronger countries such as Singapore have a restrictive one?
- What insights can be drawn from the global comparison of parliamentary debates for the debates in Germany?
- Which cultural narratives could promote the acceptance of refugees?
