Project description:

ReNeEd - Research Needs in Education - aimed, among other things, to identify and systematise research needs from the perspective of migrant education professionals in formal and non-formal education settings. Against this background, an innovative approach was chosen in order to complement already known research needs from a research-immanent perspective with research needs from a user and affected person perspective.

Guiding questions were, among others:

  • To what extent is existing research known among professionals and how is its usefulness assessed?
  • Which research topics and procedures are seen by the interviewees as potentially profitable if integration is to be promoted by the education sector?
  • Which resources and barriers to integration in the education sector have not yet been adequately addressed by research?
  • Under what conditions does research appear relevant and trustworthy?
  • To what extent do the assessments differ for different educational contexts (formal vs. non-formal) and for different paths of professionalisation (qualification in Germany vs. qualification abroad)?

Research motivation

The motivation for ReNeEd was based on sociological considerations of science. Political conjunctures and the scepticism about science motivated and derived from them increased the pressure on social science research to legitimise the consumption of state resources. Science" reacted to this development, on the one hand, by referring to research-immanent logics, methodological constraints and time structures and, on the other hand, by conducting its own research on the use of science. Corresponding research on "research utilisation" (e.g. Caral Weiss 1980) has particularly identified the assessment of trustworthiness and the assessment of relevance among potential users as conditions for the utilisation of research. In this respect, Research Needs in Education (ReNeEd) wanted to contribute to a validation and differentiation of research concerns as well as to their connectivity.

Work plan & methodology

  1. Elaboration of design and guiding questions for interviews
  2. Theory-guided sampling of interview participants
  3. Conducting interviews; transcription; qualitative analysis to identify research topics
  4. Online survey to weight research topics from the interviews; statistical analysis

Results/Outcomes

Identification of research needs of migrant education professionals as an approach/starting point
Provision of a transferable methodology with which professionals can be considered in the formulation of research programmes
Validation and differentiation of research-immanent and political perspectives on research.
