Welfare services provided by secular migrant organisations in Germany

Project head: Prof. Dr. Magdalena Nowicka
The study was intended to make visible which welfare services are provided by secular migrant organisations in Germany. The conditions under which these services are provided were also considered. For the stocktaking, the ZfTI conducted a telephone survey of selected migrant organisations in Germany. In this context, the social services offered by the organisations and further information (such as numbers of users, staff and infrastructural conditions) as well as experiences and framework conditions were requested. Case studies, carried out in various municipalities by the team at DeZIM, supplemented the analysis of the conditions under which social services can be provided by migrant organisations. In addition, representatives of umbrella organisations and associations were interviewed.
Results: Most migrant organisations are characterised by members with a migration background in Turkey (26 percent) or Syria. They address at least one offer to young people (85 per cent), refugees (65 per cent) or senior citizens (49 per cent). Flexibility, proximity to their target groups and mobilisation of voluntary commitment are their strengths. Schools and welfare organisations are important cooperation partners. In order to further develop their services, they need to participate more in the structures of German welfare.
