Access Barriers and Success Factors for the Social Integration of Nursing Professionals in Rural and Urban Areas of Baden-Württemberg

In recent years, the intensified public debate on the recruitment of professionals from abroad, accompanied by sometimes controversial views on immigration and integration, underscores the urgency of staff shortages in nearly all sectors, particularly in the nursing sector. Germany has implemented various measures, including recruitment programs, to address the existing staffing gap in nursing.

While the number of nursing professionals migrated from third countries has increased in recent years, there remains a significant knowledge gap regarding the social and structural conditions necessary for successful social integration of nursing professionals from third countries, particularly with respect to potential improvements in recruitment rules, individual experiences, and associated mobility views of nursing staff. This research project aims to address this existing research gap by generating scientific insights into the success factors and barriers associated with the social rooting and integration of newly migrated nursing professionals in both rural and urban areas of Baden-Württemberg. The research project combines qualitative and quantitative approaches to explore the question of social rooting of third-country nationals in the host society from various perspectives. The research findings are intended to serve as a basis for the development of policy recommendations and will be discussed with representatives of the host society and third-country nationals.
