The Institute for Employment Research (IAB)

The Institute for Employment Research (IAB) is the research institute of the Federal Employment Agency (BA) in Nuremberg. It was founded in 1967 and is dedicated to issues relating to the labor market. The research area “Migration, Integration, and International Labor Market Research” is headed by Prof. Dr. Herbert Brücker and Prof. Dr. Yuliya Kosyakova. The IAB examines how flight and migration affect labor markets and social security systems in Germany and Europe. It focuses in particular on factors relating to the integration of migrants and refugees into the labor market, the education system, and society, as well as the structure and selectivity of return migration and onward migration and their effects on labor market integration and labor force potential in Germany. Since 2013, the IAB has conducted the annual IAB-SOEP Migration Sample, and since 2016, the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees, which has also included refugees from Ukraine since 2023. In 2024, the International Mobility Panel of Migrants in Germany (IMPa) was also launched, a multi-cohort longitudinal survey of immigrants with a focus on return and onward migration. These three longitudinal studies make a key contribution to migration and refugee research in Germany.
