Three years of the war of aggression against Ukraine: DeZIM research and contributions

Three years after the escalation of the war, Ukrainian refugees still have temporary protection status in Germany. Even though temporary protection means uncertainty about the future, it gives my interviewees immediate access to childcare and language lessons. This gives them time to make plans for the future shortly after their arrival in Germany. It gives them a sense of control and purpose.

Support for refugees

How much support was there in Germany?

How are refugees doing in Germany?

Ukrainian refugee mothers tell me that they are involved in solidarity work on a private and professional level: For example, they organize playdates for their children and set up self-help groups for Ukrainian refugee mothers. This commitment gives them a sense of purpose and motivates them to stay. Solidarity-based relationships with other migrants from the entire post-Soviet region who were living in Germany long before the war escalated also have an anchoring effect.
