Feeling Represented in the City
Untertitel: How Queer Migrants Create Their Own Spaces of Belonging in Berlin
AutorInnen: Baro, Lea Publikationsjahr: 2025
This chapter explores the intricate relationship between feelings of belonging, representation, and urban space in Berlin, focusing on queer FLINTA* migrants. Based on a creative mixed methods research design consisting of interviews, mapping exercises, photovoice, and focus groups, the research explores how queer migrants build their own sanctuary. It delves into the challenges of establishing safe(r) spaces amidst tensions between queer politics, anti-racism, and urban commercialisation. By highlighting neighbourhoods as hubs of shared otherness fostering belonging, the chapter explores what queer FLINTA* migrants need to feel represented. It showcases how feeling represented correlates with a profound sense of belonging born from shared experiences. The study underscores the importance of affective solidarity and spaces fostering queer migrant joy, providing safety, support, and representation. It finds that community and shared affects fuel the advocacy that pushes for deeper political representation beyond leisure spaces so everyone can feel like they belong in the city.
