Refugee camps are unique forms of human habitation that are essential and necessary. They are temporary spaces created between war and cities that represent politics into space. These camps are growing due to the rising number of refugees and displaced people in the past years. Drawing from urban planning concepts, camp management tools and camp narrative, this study will explore the spatial relationship between camp residents and their space. It will also explore the relationship between space and camp management policies. The alZaatari Syrian refugee camp in Jordan is a case study, which shows the evolution of space from emergency camp to a more developed urban environment. This paper will explore the need for new strategies in planning these settlements that include the refugees as partners in the planning process.
